Emotional intelligence

It is quite important for us to develop our emotional intelligence foundation skills.

What is meaning of emotional intelligence?

From oxford

emotional intelligence
noun
  • the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.
“emotional intelligence is the key to both personal and professional success”
  • Emotional intelligence (otherwise known as emotional quotient or EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.
The first step is whether we know our emotions well? For children, I  commenced with identifying different emotions on our faces like anger, happiness and sadness. This was extended from facial language to overall body language. Once the children had an understanding of these emotions, we could support the children to label these emotions and to reflect and think about, what caused us to feel a certain way and then to share this verbally with others. But for adult, it will be more complicated to identify a lot of different kinds of emotions. Not just happy, sad and lonely.

I began the journey to create a gratitude tree. Learning intentions were for children to begin to understand the meaning of gratitude. It also provided the opportunity for children to think about being grateful for things around them and develop an awareness of others. Developing skills of Mindfulness, Empathy and Gratitude takes focus, deep thinking and awareness of children themselves and those around them. In order to enhance this deeper thinking, it is vital to provide opportunities for children to reflect on their participation in various learning experiences in the program.

We collected some branches and together with colored paper and cardboard for record the children’s voice and thinking. I invited the children to sit as one to one discussion. We discussed some questions before they shared with me their own gratitude message.

  • What was something that went well for you today?
  • Who is someone you feel really grateful for? Tell us why.
  • What is about our kinder community that makes it a special place?
  • What made you smile? Or, When you think of someone in particular, what did they do to make you feel happy?
  • What is something you are looking forward to do when you come to Banksia?
  • What activity do you like playing with your family, that made you feel happy?

In order for children to have their voice heard more authentically, I provided opportunities to discuss the meaning of appreciation. This in itself reinforces an empathetic approach to teaching and

The children will begin to understand what appreciation looks like and feels like. It will help children to begin to demonstrate kindness, empathy and gratitude within their play, to think of others and develop a sense of empathy; how others may be feeling.
